The school year starts Thursday on the South Shore, and with a new year comes new meals in the school lunch program!

This year, the program has expanded to include not just elementary schools, but all middle and junior high schools across the province.

And yes there are new meal options too! They’re apparently kid-approved and feature some local ingredients. Here’s a taste of what’s new:

  • Sweet and sour meatballs or tofu
  • Chicken or falafel wraps
  • Mini veggie or cheese pizzas
  • Creamy pasta with chicken and vegetables — or a vegetarian version
  • Macaroni and cheese with beef and vegetables — or vegetarian mac & cheese

Cultural & Local Highlights

  • Acadian chicken fricot
  • Murgh makhani (butter chicken)
  • Corn chowder with l’uskinikn (a traditional Mi’kmaw biscuit)
  • Moujadara (baked rice with lentils and caramelized onions)

Kids will have two choices every school day, and you can view the full menu and order online [HERE].
