The Municipality of Chester is advising residents to avoid waters in an area of Rafuse Cove.
Water testing is being done in three sites around the cove, and high levels of Enterococci bacteria have been found in one – Goose Creek.
If a person is exposed to Enterococci bacteria, it can cause infections, fever, chills, abdominal pain, urinary tract infections and other health issues.
The Municipality is asking people avoid swimming, surfing, or kayaking in the area until bacteria levels improve.
The area sits at the mouth of Vaughans River.
They suggest avoiding any activity where the water could possibly be swallowed.
The two other sites in Rafuse Cove, as well as two sites in Bayswater Pond are well below the accepted level for bacteria, and all sites will continue to be tested by Coastal Action into September.
