Hitchhiking! Do You Pick Up Hitchhikers and Have You Ever Hitchhiked?

It used to be a really common mode of transportation. At least that’s what I’ve been told. In the 70s and 80s and even the 90s I think a lot of people didn’t think twice about thumbing a ride. A lot has changed since then though. The world seems to be a little bit scarier or maybe people are just paying attention more. Regardless, people still do it. Once every few mouths, and even more in the Summer I see someone standing on the side of the highway with their thumb out. I rarely ever pick them up. My rule is if I know them I will give them a ride but other then that, nope. Maybe it’s silly of me to be that cautious but I don’t know you never know what could happen. It also makes it more difficult because of COVID-19. I don’t really want strangers in my car if they might be sick.

I know other people feel differently though. I know some may pick up anyone who needs a ride and don’t mind if they’re a stranger. That’s fine as long as you are safe and the person you are picking up is safe and nine times out of ten that is the case. I have heard some bad stories though of people acting strange or worse, so be careful who you let in your car! Also remember that on some highways in Nova Scotia hitchhiking is illegal, though it does not seem like this is enforced much. Do you pick up hitchhikers? Have you hitchhiked? Have any strange stories about the experience?
