I was just reading a story that an experiment in China produced a severe drop in the number of mosquitoes in one area. The short version… researchers have tried introducing sterile males to limit mosquito numbers, but in this case, they sterilized the females and infected the males with a bacteria that reduces their ability to mate. The result was a 95% reduction in mosquito numbers.
Unfortunately, we seem to have a bumper crop around here this year, and it’s a bit late for the whole sterilization thing. But we still have to find ways to deal with them.
