How To Get In

It’s always something. Most winter’s you might be concerned with clearing snow. This year, with the weather we have been getting, trying to get in a vehicle can be a bit of an issue. A day of rain followed by temperatures that drop below freezing can sometimes make things a bit interesting when car doors freeze.

So, after spending a couple morning this year trying to pry my way into my vehicle, I thought there must be a way to prevent this from happening. I quick search online gave me a few ideas.

The first thing that comes up on a number of different sites was… park in a garage. Sounds perfectly reasonable. If you have a garage. Since I don’t happen to have one of those handy, it really isn’t a good solution. I suppose I could get a load of lumber delivered and put one up real quick, but I probably wouldn’t get done before the temperature dropped again. So maybe I’ll just skip that.

They also suggest maybe putting a cover or tarp over your vehicle. I’m thinking these people do not live where they have really windy days.

They then go on to say you should make sure your door gaskets are clean. They should be washed and carefully dried, to make sure no moisture is on them that might cause them to freeze. That’s not going to be easy on a rainy day. Although it could be easy if I had a garage.

There was even a suggestion to put a towel over the door and close the door, leaving part of the towel sticking out so you could use that to pull on. This would give you a better grip and could save you from pulling off your door handle. It could work. But pulling on a frozen towel doesn’t seem like a great option either.

A couple of suggestions seemed like a good idea. Spraying your door gaskets with a silicon lubricant or a de-icing solution. That seems like it might work. If it would stop raining long enough to stand outside doing it. And you do have to be careful that what you spray on isn’t something that might react with the rubber in the gasket and eat it away. But there are products that would work, so that seems to be the best solution.

If it would just stop raining long enough to give things a quick squirt.
