I Can Still Play “3 Blind Mice”

People of a certain age may remember playing the recorder in school. No, not a tape recorder. It’s a woodwind instrument.

And I’m sure we all learned Three Blind Mice as our first tune.

Later a number of schools switched to the ukulele in the Nova Scotia music departments.

For me, the recorder was the gateway instrument to bagpipes. When I was 14 I decided I wanted to join a Pipe and Drum band in the neighbourhood, and luckily enough the fingering on the recorder was almost the same as the bagpipe chanter.

I also had an electric guitar in junior high, but never got too far – I could play the bass lines from Smoke on the Water and 25 or 6 to 4. I probably should have bought a bass guitar.

What instrument did you play, however briefly in school? Did you take lessons?
