Everyone should have a collection. It’s a great hobby that keeps you out of trouble. And you don’t always have to spend a fortune because you’re buying things second hand. Right?
Let me confess right here that there was a time that I used to collect bizarre vinyl records, and the cream of my collection was bizarre Christmas singles. Whether it was strange single sleeve cover art, song choice or just a way below average performance, those records were my pride and joy. You have no idea how many terrible, awful Christmas songs there are out there.
Eventually I ended up selling them to the only other bad recording collector I knew, a fellow who by the way still works in the entertainment field for the province’s daily newspaper. That’s all I’m saying.
So when the news that Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You finally made it to number one on Billboard after 25 years, it kind of puts it all into perspective when I ask you to name your least favourite Christmas song. And I bring that up because a recent UK music poll found that it was also the number one most annoying Christmas song.
If you want to talk annoying Christmas songs, I probably once owned it. Like Honky the Christmas Goose by legendary Leafs goalie Johnny Bower, or Charo’s Donde Esta Santa Claus? Or Jingle Cats, “Silent Night” because nothing says Christmas like the sound of cats yowling along to beloved Christmas tunes.
From the R & B world, there’s Back Door Santa, Santa Claus Wants Some Lovin’, country has Christmas In Prison and heavy metal gets AC/DC’s Mistress For Christmas. We’re just looking at the tip of the iceberg here, folks.
But here’s my least favourite recognizable Christmas song – John Denver’s Please Daddy Don’t Get Drunk This Christmas. He actually released it on two of his albums!!!
And from the “so bad it’s good” category, I like Christmas Shoes. There I said it.
