It’s McHappy Day! Here’s Some History Of McDonald’s In The Maritimes!

It’s McHappy Day at McDonald’s! Proceeds from all meals go to The Ronald McDonald Houses (which are places where sick kids and their families can stay while receiving care). Swing by one today and help out! There are also a number of local charities that will benefit from today too!

Since we’re talking about McDonald’s, I thought it would be cool to share some McDonald’s facts with you, specifically having to do with the Maritimes!

  • The first McDonald’s in Nova Scotia opened in 1971 in Dartmouth (and no, the McDonald Bridge was not named after the golden arches).
  • The McFlurry was first served in the town of Bathurst, New Brunswick in 1997, where it was created.
  • The original Halifax Ronald McDonald House opened in 1982! The new one just opened in April!
  • Nova Scotia has 46 different locations.
  • For a brief period, McDonald’s restaurants in Atlantic Canada served fish and chips.

  • Ben Holmes has lived on the South Shore of Nova Scotia for most of his life and has a deep passion for the culture and community of Nova Scotia and the Maritimes. He believes strongly in the importance of radio and other local media, and the role they play in keeping communities informed, connected, and entertained.
He is the host of “Breakfast With Ben” on CKBW in Bridgewater. When he is not talking, at least not into a microphone, Ben enjoys spending time outdoors, cycling, watching films, taking road trips, and being around family and friends.
