It’s a bit strange. On one hand, I feel bad for people down south, trying to deal with something they rarely ever see… snow.
It’s a fair bit of snow a lot of these places got. And they aren’t used to it. For us, it would be just another day. For them, it’s a disaster.
But it does kind of make the point that it all comes down to what you’re used to. Let’s be honest, the first time we get snow every year there are always a few issues. We forget how to drive in the stuff. It takes a few minutes to remember how to deal with it… slow down, allow a bit of extra space between vehicles… all those sorts of things we do on a regular basis when we see roads turn white. Just imagine if you only had to deal with something like that ever few decades. Maybe even once in your lifetime.
So while it is amusing in some ways, I also feel bad for them.
A winter storm is no big deal for most of us. We deal with them on a regular basis. Power outages can be a pain to deal with at the best of times. In winter, they can be deadly. But in more northerly areas, we have an idea how to deal with it. It happens every so often. But if it only happens once every thirty years, figuring out how to deal is not always obvious.
It comes down to what you’re used to I guess. In some ways, I guess it gives us an advantage. Maybe it’s an advantage we don’t always want, but it does come in handy.
