Just Because You Can…

There seems to be a lot of talk about the new Winnie-the-Pooh movie. I have only seen the trailer for Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey, and I have to say it is both amusing and disturbing.

Yes, it is disturbing to see a childhood hero turned into a homicidal maniac. But at the same time, it’s interesting, even a bit amusing. It’s is definitely not for children.

The basic premise is that Christopher Robin grows up and goes away to college, leaving his friends to fend for themselves. Pooh and Piglet turn feral and take their revenge. So the cute little bear becomes a horror movie slasher.

You might wonder how they could do such a thing, and it is all the result of expiring copyright. The time was up on the characters, so they became public domain, which means people can do pretty much anything they want with them. Other classic characters from our childhoods will soon follow suit, and the person behind this movie has already expressed interest in giving the same treatment to others. And I’m sure that if there is money to be made, others will follow.

Some of these may include the original Mickey Mouse cartoon, Steamboat Willie and even Bambi. Others could end up getting the same treatment as well.

However, this slasher Pooh doesn’t seem to look a lot like the Pooh I remember from my childhood, so you probably are in no danger of confusing the two, which is a good thing.

I’m not a big slasher movie fan myself, so this might not be right at the top of my list of films I just have to see. But it is an interesting concept.

But is does make me wonder, are we running out of stories?
