The province’s minister of justice has apologized for his comments on domestic violence.
Brad Johns told reporters yesterday he didn’t think the issue was an epidemic
Johns was answering a question on recommendations from the Mass Casualty Commission.
Premier Tim Houston says it’s an issue they take very seriously.
“We want to be clear: domestic violence is an epidemic. The commission included that in their report, we’re working hard on the recommendations. We’ve made investments to address gender-based violence,” said Houston moments after Johns’ comments.
In a statement, Johns says his comments were wrong and have caused pain.
“Domestic violence is a serious issue in Nova Scotia. I want survivors of domestic violence to know that they will be supported when they come forward and have confidence that when they do, they will be believed and treated respectfully,” said Johns.
Both Liberal leader Zach Churchill and NDP leader Claudia Chender have called for Johns’ resignation.
