Kennetcook’s Wyatt Sanford guaranteed boxing medal in Paris

Nova Scotia’s Wyatt Sanford is on the cusp of boxing greatness.

The Kennetcook native took down his opponent from Uzbekistan to advance to semifinals in men’s boxing at the Paris Olympics.

With the win, he’s guaranteed at least a bronze medal.

His mom Angela posted a live video from the arena on her Facebook page.

“That was the best moment ever,” she said through tears.

“To be able to be here and watch it in person was phenomenal. We’re coming home with a medal, we have nothing to lose and we’re going straight for gold!”

The 25-year-old’s next match is Sunday morning at 7:30, if he wins he’ll box for gold on August 7.

A watch party was held in his home community, with fans cheering as Sanford’s arm was raised.

It will be Canada’s first boxing medal since 1996.
