The Nova Scotia Liberal Party has ended its legal challenge against Progressive Conservative MLA Susan Corkum-Greek, accused of distributing Tim Hortons gift cards during her campaign in Lunenburg.
The court papers, filed in mid-November, alleged the cards were an attempt to influence voters in violation of the Elections Act. On Friday, the Liberals announced they would no longer pursue the matter, stating that Elections Nova Scotia is the appropriate body to address any potential violations.
The controversy involved Corkum-Greek’s campaign manager purchasing $51.75 worth of $2 gift cards to distribute at a drive-thru event. The campaign manager resigned following the incident. Despite the allegations, Corkum-Greek retained her seat in last month’s election, receiving 60 percent of the vote and finishing nearly 3,000 votes ahead of Liberal candidate Melissa Duggan.
The legal challenge aimed to disqualify Corkum-Greek from office, but the Nova Scotia Supreme Court delayed hearing the case until after the election. With her re-election and the case dropped, the matter appears resolved.
