Liberals pushing bill for more breast cancer screening

The provincial Liberals are pushing for more breast cancer screening.

They’ve introduced the ‘Find It Early’ act in the legislature.

It would help women with dense breasts get screened sooner.

Liberal MLA Rafah DiCostanzo, who was diagnosed with breast cancer last year, says it could save lives.

“Cancer in women with dense breasts is often discovered when a woman feels a lump after a normal mammogram. These are called interval cancers,” said DiCostanzo.

She says the province became a leader for informing women if they have dense breasts, but they are still denied supplementary screening.

“Instead of encouraging women in Nova Scotia to find the cancer early, our policy denies them ultrasound, MRI and any other screening technology available in other provinces.”

The government has not yet made a commitment to the opposition bill.
