There’s money, then there’s football money.
Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes just signed a contract extension to become the highest paid athlete so far. You pretty much have to say “so far” because you know people will be gunning for more. But when you add up all the extras and possible bonuses he could be stuffing a bit over a half billion dollars in his mattress.
Yeah. That’s a “b”. It is not a mistake.
Now he won’t start getting that sort of money for a couple years. He has to finish his rookie contract first, which has him making under a million a year. But he does get a $10 million bonus.
Now, he’s a good player. He deserves to get paid well for what he does. I just can’t get my head around that sort of money. I can not imagine making that much money. There’s only so much “stuff” you can buy. What are you going to use it for?
I’m sure there will be charities and non-profits lining up around the block to help him make that decision. And probably more than a few shady business deals, hoping for a piece. But with all that, you’re still looking at an amount that would actually be hard to spend.
It really is hard to imagine.
