Listener’s Dilemma – Don’t KonMari My Kitchen!

A listener writes with this dilemma:

My wife and I eat out a lot and since we don’t have kids our kitchen is fairly minimal. I’m the only one who dabbles in gourmet meals, and when I’m in the city I’ll make a point of picking up certain ingredients that I can’t find in this area for a recipe I want to try out. Sometimes it can take months for me to use that shrimp paste I bought, but I usually get around to making the recipe before the paste passes it’s expiry date.
My big problem is that my wife has discovered Marie Kondo on Netflix and bought her books and roped me into her decluttering mania. Admittedly, KonMari bedrooms, bathrooms and closets have been great for us and we seem to be on the same page with throwing out things that we don’t need and we can both find things much more quickly now.
Where this KonMari mania is not sparking joy is in my kitchen. Our fridge and pantry shelves are more than 3/4 full because of my food ingredients for my planned recipes and they’re going to stay that way. And some of my unusual kitchen appliances and gadgets may only get used once or twice a year, but when I’ve been planning to make a gourmet dinner that needs those things, I can’t run out to the city and buy another one each time. Other than building my own kitchen in another part of the house, what’s the solution here? Has anyone else run up against a Marie Kondo spouse and seen sparks but no joy?
