LISTENER’S DILEMMA: Is A Vaper A Smoker?

A listener wrote us to ask for your advice on this:

My husband has smoked for ten years, but last year kind of gave them up when he switched to e-cigarettes and vaping (the ones with nicotine). I’m glad he’s making an effort to quit but one thing really bothers me. When he visits his doctor and is asked if he smokes, he says “no” he gave them up a year ago. Isn’t that dishonest and very misleading? I wish I could get his doctor to rephrase the question to “Do you use any nicotine inhalers?” Am I being overly concerned for nothing? How much healthier are e-cigarettes than tobacco or are they the same? Do the nicotine vapers and e-cigarette smokers out there consider themselves non-smokers?

Cathy Hillier: my dr knows i vape and still says i am a non smoker

Rosann Clairmont: Don’t you dare call his dr. He’s a grown man. You can voice your concerns to your husband like an adult. And imo vaping is not the same

as smoking. If you were a smoker and went to vaping you would know this

Valerie Broughm-Wamboldt: When I went to the cardiologist he asked me if I smoke. I said no I vape. He said are you inhaling nicotine? Then you are no

better. I still vape.
