Local Group Holding Conference To End Period Poverty

Thousands of women across Nova Scotia struggle to buy hygiene products each month.

The situation is known as period poverty.

Period poverty may not be a term most people are familiar with.

But Erin Casey with Dignity.Period. is working to raise awareness around the issue.

“One in seven girls in Canada report having difficulties affording product, and as a result, missing school,” she said, “And one in three women in Canada under 25 have the same difficulties.”

Recently, many municipalities and organizations have begun initiatives to get women and girls the products they need.

To help aid those in need, Casey is organizing a conference this fall to bring together groups from across the province who are also dealing with period poverty.

“There are lots of people working on this right now, but we don’t all know each other,” she said, “So the goal is to get everyone in the same room so we can talk, share ideas and make some new plans together.”

Casey wants to hear from these groups to determine who would be interested in attending or presenting at the event.

The Period Poverty Summit is scheduled for October 29 at the NSGEU Building in Dartmouth.
