Lots Blooming

It’s that time of year when flowers start to pop up in places you might not expect.

The May flowers seemed to be a bit early this year, but I did find a few fairly easy. I have a small patch right next to a very small Eastern White Cedar seedling. Now that’s an interesting story.

Many years ago, my father got his hands on some cedar seedlings. Little tiny cedar trees, more native to Ontario than around here. But he planted them. And now, about forty years later, most of them are still no more than two feet high. These trees were not fans of our area. Except one, which is about twenty five feet tall. It’s the only one that grew. Right in front of the deck so that it blocks the view. But since it’s the only one that grew, I hate to cut it down.

But the amazing thing is, one of these cedars has managed to reproduce. I have two very small white cedar seedlings that have grown from the seeds produced by trees that refuse to grow. It’s confusing, but somehow intriguing.

Anyway, back to the flowers.

The service berries are also in full bloom. They sure do make the roadside more interesting, with bushes in full bloom along every road around. One of these days I’m going to map out where the bushes are, so I can go pick the berries later in the summer and make something out of them. Judging from the number of blooms, there should be no shortage of berries. If I could remember where they are.

I also went looking for lady slippers over the past weekend. Didn’t locate any, but it may still be a bit early.

However, I did find several trilliums, which I really enjoy.

Soon the lambskill will also be in bloom. All of which make it an interesting time to go for a walk. Just to see what might be blooming out there.
