After closing amidst the pandemic the Canadian Border Service Agency ports of entry in Lunenburg and Shelburne have reopened.
South Shore-St.Margaret’s MP Rick Perkins brought the closures to the attention of Minister Marco Mendicino on May 6, in the House of Commons and since then they have been working together to reopen the ports.
“I followed up with correspondence, I spoke directly with Minister Mendicino and I issued a news release calling for the opening of these
services,” said Perkins. ”
At that time the Lunenburg and Shelburne ports were not operating on the South Shore forcing the boating community to use Yarmouth and Halifax as the check-in points when returning to Canada.
“I am very pleased that the Minister listened to my representations, and I thank him for taking action of behalf of the residents of the South Shore,” Perkins added.
During the pandemic, it was stated by the CBSA that they would reopen all ports of entry when all travel restrictions were lifted. That took place back in February, however many ports including Shelburne and Lunenburg remained closed.
The reopening is good news for the South Shore, enabling cruise ships and international travelers to visit directly and help boost the tourism businesses in the area.
