Lunenburg moves forward with renaming of Cornwallis Street to Queen Street

The Lunenburg Town Council has confirmed its decision to rename Cornwallis Street to Queen Street, rejecting a final attempt to reverse the motion.

During Tuesday’s council meeting, Councillor Ed Halverson, who has consistently opposed the name Queen Street, pushed to reconsider the decision, arguing it conflicted with the intent of addressing historical wrongs.

The motion to rescind the renaming failed on a tie vote, with Councillors Duggan, Halverson, and Mayor Jamie Myra voting in favor, while Councillors Birtles, Ernst, and Deputy Mayor Mosher voted against it.

Halverson has been a vocal critic of the change from the start, maintaining that the new name undermines the purpose of reconciliation.

The renaming process, which began in December 2022, will now proceed under the direction of the newly elected council set to take office after the October 19 municipal election.
