Cumberland County RCMP have released more information on the individuals charged in relation to this week’s border blockade at the Nova Scotia border with New Brunswick.
In a release issued today, they explained the situation that led to the arrests.
“The RCMP respects the Charter right of all Canadians to peacefully assemble, however blockading a highway is a criminal offence and this type of action will not be tolerated. Our members balanced the protestors’ rights with enforcing the law and after unsuccessfully trying to resolve the blockade through dialogue, the protestors left the RCMP with no choice other than to move in and begin effecting arrests in an effort to dismantle the blockade and reopen the highway.”
RCMP Cpl. Chris Marshall says of the three charged two are from Cumberland County and the third, a 51-year-old female is from Lunenburg County.
All three individuals are facing the same charge of Mischief and police say all three have since been released.
None of the individuals were named by the police but they did confirm that the Lunenburg County woman is due in Amherst Provincial Court on September 23.
Marshall says the RCMP will continue to keep a close eye on the border for the remainder of the week.
