Maders Cove Woman Opens Sea-inspired Shop

Her love of the sea inspired a Maders Cove woman to open her own collectables store after she lost her job during the pandemic.

Krista Laybolt was working as a Health Care Management Consultant, and when she found herself out of work the panic started to set in.

“For a couple of days I didn’t know what I was going to do, but there is a saying I like which is life’s roughest storms prove the strength of our anchors,” she said.

“I think what people have learned through this is that they have strength they didn’t know they had, and I had to pull from mine”

Laybolt has always been creative and knew that she could draw on that to create her own job.

Her store Sea Witch Collectables opened August 1 in the basement of her home, where she sells a variety of sea-themed art including pour paintings, resin art, stained glass and seashell wreathes.

She says the ocean has always inspired her.

“The beach is my happy place and I spend a lot of time there.”

Laybolt says she tries to be respectful of natural resources and doesn’t remove things from the beach to create her art. She orders most of her materials from suppliers.

She says she could never have foreseen that she would be making art for a living.

“I’m happy everyday. I wake up and can’t wait to go to my store and start making things.”

Sea Witch Collectables is located at 9383 Highway 3 in Maders Cove, just outside of Mahone Bay.
