Man accused in Shelburne County wildfire case enters guilty plea

A change in plea for a man allegedly involved in Nova Scotia’s largest wildfire

Twenty-three-year-old Dalton Clark Stewart of Villagedale has pleaded guilty to leaving a fire unattended when it’s not completely extinguished.

The Barrington Lake wildfire destroyed dozens of homes and structures in 2023.

Stewart’s lawyer entered the plea on his behalf in Shelburne Provincial Court in Barrington on Wednesday.

A hearing to set a sentencing date is on January 29.

Stewart is facing two other counts, including lighting a fire on privately owned land without permission, and failing to take reasonable efforts to prevent the spread of a fire.

He entered not-guilty pleas to those charges earlier this year.

Both charges will be discussed on that date.
