You know what they say. Everyone complains about the weather, but no one does anything about it. Not that we can. It is what it is. And if you have lived around here for any length of time, you probably just have a way of accepting what we get. And if you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes.
Like the surprise sunshine last weekend. Up until Friday afternoon, it was a prediction of rain for days to come. Suddenly, we ended up with a lovely couple of days. A really nice surprise.
But there is one thing that seems to go along with the damp weather we have been having the past couple of weeks that I would rather both accept. Mosquitoes.
Sure, warm dry weather isn’t good for our gardens or our wells. But it tends to keep the mosquito population down a bit. Get a bit of dampness for a few days and suddenly the insect air force is in attack mode. Just when you want to spend time outdoors.
People have a number of ways to deal with it. I just give myself a quick squirt with the bug spray and hope I didn’t miss too many spots. Because they will find them.
Others may go with the smudge method. In fact, I have seen people standing around with the cardboard trays you get from coffee shops, waving a smouldering tray around, keeping the bugs at bay. I’m not sure what part works best, the smoke or the waving, but it seems to have some effect.
Or the little fans that make your own personal bubble of safety. Works great as long as the wind doesn’t blow much. Then again, if the wind blows, the mosquitoes have a problem with the wind.
There is also another method I have used at times. Just hang out with someone who tastes better. The bugs bite them and leave you alone. It’s not always easy to find the right person though.
But a little more sunshine would be welcome. Just to dry up some of the mosquitoes.
