Maybe Not Yet

Thanksgiving weekend was usually the time for us, as a family to take a drive to see leaves. Not a really exciting time when you’re younger, but I’ve come to appreciate it more as I get a bit more… experienced.

This year, I’m thinking maybe put it off for a week. The leaves just don’t seem to be changing in a hurry. Well, except for a couple trees across the street from the station on North Street. I think they have a bit of exhibitionist sap running through their trunks. They seem to be in a hurry to stand around naked or something. They turned early this year and are looking really good. But if you look in the other direction, up along the river and the hills beyond, there aren’t a lot changing just yet.

In past years, I can remember a Nova Scotia fall foliage map that you could check online, letting you know when you would hit peak leaf in different areas. I have not been able to find anything like that yet for this year. There was a page I found on a provincial government website that gave a percentage for leaves in different areas. I believe we were listed at about fifteen percent of leaves having changed colour.

We may have risen a bit above that, but not much. Again, looking around I see a fair number along the highway that seem to be changing, but in any spot where you can get a good view into the distance, there is still a lot of green.

So I guess maybe this year the leaf drive may be postponed.

Then again, the longer they stay on the trees, the longer I can put off the other task that comes with them. Raking them up. I can do without raking.
