A Queens County athlete will try and bring home gold from the national track and field championships in Montreal.
Sarah Mitton will compete in the shot put event.
The 23 year-old is coming off a gold medal finish at the World University Games in Italy after a throw of 18.31 metres.
Mitton says it’s hard not to think about qualifying for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
“It’s been kind of interesting for me to be saying that these days because before it was really just a dream. Things are really starting to come together and with the qualification period open now for Tokyo, we’re really fighting for a spot in there.”
To qualify, Mitton needs a throw of at least 18.50 metres or be ranked within the top 32 in the world after the qualification period.
Mitton’s personal best is 18.52 metres but it was done before qualification time opened. She currently sits 25th in the world.
Mitton will be in action at the national championships Friday evening.
