A Lyme Disease conference planned for this fall in Bridgewater has received support from the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg.
The municipality is contributing up to $10,000 towards the event.
According to statistics from January, Lunenburg, Queens, Shelburne, Yarmouth, Digby, Annapolis and Kings Counties has 21% of the province’s population but 81.3% of confirmed cases of Lyme Disease in Nova Scotia.
Mayor Carolyn Bolivar-Getson says lyme disease awareness is one of their priorities.
“The conference will be a great opportunity to raise that awareness of the disease and bring new people to the area. We will bring in some experts, people will be able to attend and get more information about Lyme Disease.”
People with Lyme typically get infected by a black legged tick, commonly known as a deer tick.
Bolivar-Getson says education is key.
“The more people that are informed about doing their daily tick checks and when to see a physician on the matter, the more likely they have caught it before it’s too late.”
The conference will be held November 16 and 17 in Bridgewater at Cineplex.
