The Municipality of the District of Lunenburg is declaring a climate emergency.
The move is part of a public commitment as they join with other municipal governments in Partners for Climate Protection to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect the climate.
Municipalities involved with PCP represent 65 percent of the Canadian population.
Mayor Carolyn Bolivar-Getson says council will be making decisions through an environmental lens.
“We will be looking at what type of footprint we’re leaving, things that we can do to change our emissions, to meet certain levels that are set out about the PCP program.”
Bolivar-Getson says the evidence has shown the need for council to take action.
“The gap in between these severe storms, that normally would be 50 to 100-year storms and we see from Hurricane Juan to Dorian here, 15 years. That window is closing up on us.
Bolivar-Getson says as part of their commitment, the municipality will begin to immediately set emission reduction targets, develop then implement a local action plan and monitor and report the results.
