It’s unbelievable how thrifty decisions by our parents when we were kids stay with us in different ways many years later. I thought I had it bad as a kid, but yesterday when Ryan and I were talking about crayons when we were kids, he topped me easily with his sad story. I’ll tell you his story after I tell you mine.
As a kid I always wanted a larger variety of crayons for back to school, but mom would always say the 8 pack had all the colours I needed. Eventually, after kicking up a fuss every year during back to school shopping, she relented and bought the 24 pack. Meanwhile back at school the kids sitting around me had 64 packs, or the special Crayola 72 pack that came with a Crayon sharpener!!
Thanks to mom’s thrifty ways I have never been able to figure out what puce, fuschia, chartreuse, cienna and cerulean look like. I can figure out the ones named for things I see in real life, but not those ones. See, scarred for life I am. I could have been a contender. But certainly not a graphic artist or interior designer.
Was there something for school you always wanted but never got? Or perhaps a toy or article of clothing?
Oh – you want to know about Ryan’s crayon story? He didn’t even get the Crayola ones. The poor kid got the Walmart knockoff version. Sad.
