Multiple boats damaged by boater exiting Chester Harbour

Lunenburg District RCMP arrested a man after responding to an incident involving the dangerous operation of a boat at the Chester Yacht Club.

The RCMP were alerted around 7:15 p.m. on September 1 that a man who left the yacht club in his boat drove erratically while leaving the harbour, hitting three other boats without stopping.

Based on a description of the man and his boat RCMP were able to locate and arrest him later that night at his home in Marriotts Cove.

The unnamed 42-year-old man now faces charges of Dangerous Operation of a Vessel and Failing to Remain at the Scene of an Accident (3 counts). Alcohol is also believed to have been a factor.

RCMP Cpl. Chris Marshall is using this case as a reminder ahead of the long weekend that police are equipped and ready to enforce the laws on the water. “The Lunenburg detachment is one of the few that has a boat and they will often patrol during the busy summer season or when there are events in the area and if we believe someone is impaired on a boat our members will engage in that kind of enforcement on the water,” Marshall said.

The man was released from custody this morning and will appear in court at a later date.
