Lock-up services in the Municipality of Shelburne will come to an end.
Council made the decision this week due to the cost of upgrading the lock-up to provincial standards, and the high-risk liability of operations.
Warden Penny Smith says it wasn’t an easy decision.
“It has a direct impact on staff and services to our community. The facility will be closed, effective Monday, May 16th,” says Smith.
Three full-time employees and one casual lock-up guard received layoff notices.
Smith says staff have met with RCMP and the province, and have been assured that high-quality service will be provided in the municipality.
Shelburne was the last municipality in Nova Scotia to provide the service.
