My Christmas Stocking Science Experiment

When I was a kid I’d always look forward to emptying my Christmas stocking first thing Christmas morning. My brother and I would get a big Navel Orange, a big red Apple, a paperback or some comic books and best book of all – the LifeSavers Book – back when they had ALL the flavours included.

One of those LifeSaver packs was Wint-o-green. It was never a favourite of mine because I thought it tasted like “old lady medicine”.

Then I discovered the special properties of Wint-O-Green LifeSavers. You could see sparks when you crunched down on one in a very dark room. The scientific term is Triboluminescence.

That’s right, blue sparks from the wintergreen oil. It never got old.

What was your favourite LifeSaver flavour?
