My Olympic Addiction

It’s a good thing the Olympics only happen for a few weeks every four years. I tend to get hooked on watching sports I really don’t understand very well, but seem to find a strange enjoyment in being an occasional spectator.

It’s not that I’m cheering on Canada all the time. I may be, but there doesn’t have to be a Canadian involved for me to get caught up in something. Like luge.

I wouldn’t search it out on a regular basis, but I find it fun to watch at the Olympics. An otherwise normal human being sits of two tiny little metal runners and goes hurtling down an ice covered slide at very high rates of speed. It reminds me of things we would do when we were kids. Possibly inspired by watching the Olympics.

And if that doesn’t seem dangerous enough, there’s always skeleton. Same thing only head first.

Then you have all the various forms of speed skating. That can get pretty exciting at times.

I also enjoy a bit of figure skating. Over the years I have actually come to understand some of what’s involved, although I still couldn’t tell you the difference between a lutz and a sow cow. But I do understand that it can actually make a difference whether you are on the inside or outside edge of your blade when execute a move.

I’ve never been much of a skier and it makes my knees ache just watching people ski moguls, and we won’t get into snowboarding. I’m quite sure I could find numerous new ways to hurt myself doing that. But it’s fun to watch.

So I’ve been watching. I might not understand everything, but it is entertaining. At least for short periods of time.

And I do like to cheer on Canada.

I also like the outfits our team were wearing at the opening ceremonies. The puffy coats and puffy vests look really warm. I have questions about the puffy scarf though. Would that keep you warm? Or is it best used as a travel pillow for the flight home? They do look cool though.
