It’s the first ‘First Responders Day’ in Nova Scotia.
May 1 is the first edition of the day, which was created last fall.
The province says it’s in recognition of the dedication, sacrifices and achievements of professional and volunteer first responders.
This includes firefighters, paramedics, military personnel, coast guard members, doctors, nurses and more.
Fire Service Association of N.S. president Greg Jones says it happens 365 days a year.
“They go out in a moment’s notice to deal with situations, from high-stress to low-stress. They do everything possible to move forward. Being recognized on this day highlights that,” said Jones.
Premier Tim Houston says they have a critical role in keeping people safe and supporting them in healthcare, law enforcement and emergency situations.
After last year’s wildfires and floods, the province passed the legislation to create the day in October.
“When you think back to those major events, a lot of folks sacrificed time at home with their families. At the end of the day, first responders do what they can to mitigate risks,” added Jones.
