N.S. ready to host World Juniors after board resigns

Halifax is once again backing the World Juniors after a mass resignation at the top of Hockey Canada.

Mayor Mike Savage reaffirmed his support after the organizations CEO and entire board stepped down on Tuesday.

Savage told reporters what happened is wrong but the city will do a “hell of a job as host”. Meantime, Premier Tim Houston says the leadership switch is an important step toward accountability and meaningful change.

Hockey’s governing body in our country is mired in scandal after it was revealed $9 million was paid to keep sexual assault allegations quiet since 1989.

An interim management committee is being put in place, to guide Hockey Canada until a new CEO and Board can be named.

Hockey Canada says the interim committee will focus on day-to-day operations. Members will select a new slate of directors by no later than a virtual election scheduled for December 17.

The World Juniors are being held in Halifax and Moncton over the holidays.
