Many are beginning to take down their Christmas trees.
Those with a real tree may be hauling it to the curb, but there are other options.
Andrew Holland with the Nature Conservancy of Canada asks you to throw the tree into the backyard.
“You can place it up against the fence or against another tree, or just lie it down. That can be an important source of warmth or shelter for over-wintering birds in our region,” says Holland.
He says you could even get the family together and decorate the tree, again. Only this time, you could use pinecones with peanut butter.
“We think of helping birds other times of the year, but we don’t consider that in the winter, they need shelter and a food source. We encourage folks to have fun with this.”
Holland suggests leaving the tree in your garden by cutting branches and laying them where spring flowers are starting to emerge, and then place the trunk on soil to provide more habitat and shelter.
