NDP Renew Call For Permanent Rent Control

The provincial NDP are making another push to bring permanent rent control to Nova Scotia.

Due to COVID-19 the province adopted a temporary rent control system last year.

NDP Leader, Gary Burrill says that rent increase issues in the province have been around since before the pandemic.

With the legislature set to reconvene on March 9th, Burrill explained why it was important to bring their new plan for permanent rent control forward.

“What they have brought about temporarily needs to be a feature of the permanent landscape of Nova Scotia as it in most of the rest of Canada.” said Burrill.

Burrill talked about the plan they will put forward on March 9th.

“It’s called the Rental Fairness and Affordability Act,” said Burrill. “It provides for bringing in, not just a temporary state of emergency bound rent control, but a permanent system of rent control. This is the system under which a majority of Canadians live today.”

The NDP will re-table the plan when the legislature sits next week.
