There is a new apple that will soon be hitting produce shelves. It might not sound like much of a big deal, but developing a new apple variety takes time. Apparently, the fact that things actually grow on trees does not make them easier to produce.
In this case the new apple was developed through seeds. Here I thought they made apples by grafting bits of one plant on another, but not so much. And this was not done using genetic modification of any kind. This new apple was made the old fashion way… using the birds and the bees.
By that I mean actual pollination. They have crossed a Honey Crisp with an Enterprise to make this new Cosmic Crisp apple. Seeds were made and collected, those seeds were planted, and then sampled until the developers found what they were looking for. An apple with the flavour of a Honey Crisp and the storage ability of an Enterprise.
They think these apples will be able to be stored for up to ten months. So nice, crisp, fresh tasting apple almost right through to the next harvest.
It has taken twenty-two years of work for this new apple to be released and it is expected to be a big deal.
Now, I like the Honey Crisp. I’d be happier with a lower price on them, but they are good. so the idea that I can enjoy a nice fresh tasting apple at the same time as the blossoms are popping out on the trees sounds pretty good.
And the name? It actually comes from the fact that the skin has a very deep red colour and has little tiny white dots on it. Sort of like stars in the sky. You know… cosmic.
It is supposed to be hitting the market soon. Can’t wait to give one a try.
