New privacy, freedom of information laws welcome but could be improved: commissioner

Nova Scotia’s privacy commissioner is welcoming some of the changes proposed in a new bill.

The PCs tabled a bill in the legislature last week that overhauls the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.

Privacy commissioner David Nurse says it brings several good changes.

It consolidates the existing legislation under one act to make the rules clearer, says commissioner David Nurse.

That includes giving him oversight of private information collected by municipalities, including local police.

The bill also makes the commissioner more independent from the governing political party.

But Nurse says the bill changes the definition of the Freedom of Information Act.

He says that could change how a judge interprets the act and lead to the government being less accountable and disclosing less information.
