New report calls for $23 to $26 per hour to make ends meet in N.S.

A big increase for what’s considered a livable wage in Nova Scotia.

According to a new report from the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, the average hourly wage should be $26.50 in Halifax for 2 adults working full-time to support 2 kids.

That’s up 14 percent from last year.

It’s slightly lower in other areas of the province.

The report’s author Christine Saulnier says it’s the biggest increase since they began calculating the wage in Halifax in 2015.

She says the high cost of shelter and food plays a role.

Saulnier said employers need to step up and provide fair wages, and the government can do more to support low-wage workers.
