A hot spot has flared up at the Long Lake wildfire in Annapolis County.
According to a social media post from the Department of Natural Resources on Monday around 6:40 p.m., crews have flown over the area, the fire is still under control and there is no immediate risk to the community.
DNR says with the high temperatures, residents should expect to see more smoke again Tuesday.
The Long Lake wildfire broke out on August 13th after a lightning strike ignited the extremely dry forest. At its maximum, it reached around 8,500 hectares, forced hundreds to evacuate and destroyed 20 homes.
Lake George Fire remains out of control
The Lake George fire in Kings County is burning out of control and has grown slightly again, reaching about 288 hectares by Monday morning, due to ongoing dry and windy conditions.
There are still no reports of damage to structures, according to a social media statement from the Department of Natural Resources.
“The fire is burning deep, and [Monday’s] high temperature will be a challenge,” the department said.
Warm temperatures are supposed to continue, Tuesday, with residents expected to see smoke in the area again.
Crews are working hard to protect homes and structures, they say. On the ground there are 23 local firefighters, 35 from DNR, and 39 from B.C.
For air support, they have two planes from Newfoundland, four from the Northwest Territories, one from DNR, along with five contracted helicopters.
Eighteen pieces of heavy equipment there as well, the statement said.
The evacuation zone remains the same, and 275 civic addresses have been evacuated since the fire broke out on September 28.
Baxters Harbour fire under control
Another small wildfire in Baxters Harbour popped up on Saturday evening but firefighters brought it under control Sunday morning.
It was about 0.1 hectares in size at the time. DNR thanked the crews for their quick work to put it out.
