Students at North Queens Community School will soon have a new place to train, play, and compete, thanks to a redevelopment project in Caledonia.
The upgrades will include a 325-metre gravel track, a regulation-sized soccer field measuring 90 by 55 metres, and accessibility improvements at the entrance.
The project addresses years of wear and damage to the existing field, which had become largely unusable due to poor conditions and ATV damage.
The redevelopment will give students a proper space for physical education and school athletics — many for the first time without needing to travel outside the region.
The Province of Nova Scotia is investing $800,000 through the Department of Communities, Culture, Tourism and Heritage. The Region of Queens Municipality is contributing $250,000 through its Community Investment Fund, and a local resident has donated a parcel of land valued at $7,500 to help expand the site footprint.
The project is being led by the North Queens Active Living Society in partnership with the Student Advisory Council and the South Shore Regional Centre for Education.
The facility is expected to serve not only students but the wider community as a local hub for recreation and events.
Officials say the investment supports broader goals of improving rural infrastructure, encouraging healthy communities, and expanding access to sport and recreation across Nova Scotia.
The project is now out to tender, after which an estimate on when it’s expected to be complete will be available.
