Nova Scotia Teachers Union elects new president

The Nova Scotia Teachers Union has elected Peter Day as its new president.

Day defeated Shawn Hanifen in a second ballot election receiving 60.6 per cent of the vote.

In a release, the NSTU says the first round of votes by the 10,000 members was done electronically last week but did not produce a winner.

Sixty-nine per cent of its membership voted in the runoff vote Wednesday.

Day has been a teacher for 22 years in the Strait and Cape Breton-Victoria regions.

He’s a member of the provincial executive and serves as the secretary treasurer for the union.

Day assumes office August 1st, replacing Ryan Lutes, who has been president since August 1st, 2022.
