NS Black History Icon-Marjorie Turner-Bailey

February is African Heritage Month and I’m highlighting some amazing African Nova Scotians!

Marjorie Turner‑Bailey is a local Olympian from Lockeport, Nova Scotia. Since high school she was a record‑breaking sprinter and would train by running in Greenwood or along Crescent Beach near the town of Lockeport. She would go on to compete in the Pan American Games in Mexico, took part in the first World Cup in Germany, and would eventually compete for Team Canada in the 1976 Summer Olympic Games in Montreal! She ran in a relay team and Team Canada came in 4th, which was a record for the country and the Commonwealth at the time! She was also a semi‑finalist in both the 100 m and 200 m!

Here are the rest of her accolades!

• 1st Track Meet 1964 Mount Allison Uni Invitat’l
• Summer 1964 Equalled 11.2 Record by Aileen Meagher
• Silver Medal Commonwealth Games 4×100 Relay Team
