NS Black History Month Icon-Ralph Jordon Croucher (JRDN)

As we celebrate Nova Scotia Black Heritage Month, it’s the perfect time to shine a light on one of the province’s most influential modern artists: JRDN, born Ralph Jordon Croucher in Halifax and raised between Nova Scotia and Ontario.

Growing up, he listened to and was immersed in the culture of hip hop through jazz-rap pioneer King Lou of Dream Warriors, who lived in the same building during JRDN’s childhood years in Toronto. Before he got into music, he studied and played basketball at St. Francis Xavier University, later playing professionally for a year in France.

JRDN made it onto the national music radar through Canadian Idol, which opened doors to the music industry and connected him with other big Canadian talent. He would go on to collaborate with Classified on his 2007 debut album No Dress Code, marking the beginning of his rise in Canada’s R&B scene.

In 2010, his album IAMJRDN cemented his place in Canadian music. The project produced two Gold‑certified hits — “U Can Have It All” and “Like Magic” both charting on the Canadian Hot 100 and dominating MuchMusic countdowns. He won a Juno Award for New Artist of the Year and R&B/Soul Recording of the Year.

JRDN continues to make music and is a true mentor to up-and-coming musicians and artists. A true Nova Scotia icon who teaches us that determination and talent can bring you far!
