With profound sadness, the family of Caron Matthew Retieffe, 77, of Maitland, share the news of his passing on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, at South Shore Regional Hospital in Bridgewater.
Born in St. George, NL, he was a son of the late Thomas and Laura (Tucker) Retieffe.
Caron lived in Newfoundland until he was fifteen years of age and then went to Ontario for work. In 1969 he came to Nova Scotia, where he began his career as a fisherman, dedicating his life to the sea for 40 years. Through the years he enjoyed weightlifting, playing the guitar, Bingo, playing cribbage, and watching sports on TV. He had a soft spot for cats and especially loved each one.
In reflecting upon his life, we remember his unconditional love for his family. Always enjoying spending time and catching up over a phone call, a coffee, or a good meal. He had such a love for making people smile with his quirky jokes and funny stories. His zest for life and fun personality will forever live on in our memories and in our hearts.
Caron leaves behind his loving wife of 50 years, Mary; his daughters, Crystal (Fred) Sarty of Lower Northfield, Melissa Eisnor, Parkdale; adored grandchildren, Amanda Ashley Cross, Melissa Cross, Michaela Croft; greatgrandchildren, Ryker Sadler, and Grayson Merry; step-grandchildren, Courtney and Jessica Sarty; step-great-grandson, DJ Hamm; brothers, Thomas, Robert (Sharmane), both of Stephenville, NL; sisters, Rose (Danny) Nodine, Stephenville, NL, Debbie (Gill) Abbott, Dartmouth, Marilyn (Wayne) Simon, Cambridge, ON, Doreen (Stephen) Fields, ON; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Caron was predeceased by his sister, Liz Benoit and brother-in law, Bill Benoit.
In keeping with Caron’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be a Celebration of his life at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to Personal Care Cremations & Memorial Services.
