Ottawa announces more funding for scanning at former N.S. residential school

The federal government announced more funding is on the way to support further research and ground surveying at the former Shubenacadie Indian Residential School.

Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations Marc Miller made the announcement today during a visit to the Sipekne’katik First Nation, north of Halifax.

He says Ottawa’s contribution of $326,000 will go towards further underground scanning (focusing on areas not covered during last year’s scans), memorizations, and other research.

Additionally, the funds can also be used for commemorative events or structures like statues or plaques.

The federal government has been funding more and more projects like this since the discovery of 182 unmarked graves last June at a former residential school in British Columbia.

The funding comes as part of a 5-year $209.8 federal commitment to support work at former residential school sites to help communities document, locate and memorialize burial sites at former residential schools.
