Outhouse Memories

I’ve grown up with outhouses – my grandparents lived in the country and that’s what we had until I was a teen.

I’ve used a two-holer many times, but no one has been able to explain the exact use of such a thing.

I can’t picture a husband and wife sitting side by side, so this must have been put 1n to double the “life” of the little outbuilding.

One thing I haven’t experienced is an outhouse with the crescent cutout on the door. There are many theories about the cutout.

Supposedly the idea is hundreds of years old or just came around in the sixties.

Some say the crescent cutout was to indicate that the outhouse was for women only, as men would simply used the fields and forest.

Others suggest that it was before there was hardware for handles and such, and it was an easy way to grab the door and open it.

Have you ever used an outhouse? Anything memorable about your visit?
