Hundreds of part-time instructors remain on strike at Mount Saint Vincent University and Saint Mary’s University as negotiations remain stalled.
The workers, represented by CUPE 3912, are demanding higher wages and better job security. Their strike began last week after both universities failed to reach new agreements.
CUPE President Lauren MacKenzie says morale remains strong despite the uncertainty. “Our members cannot carry on doing their work under these conditions,” she said, adding that part-time instructors still have no benefits, pensions, or long-term employment security.
At Dalhousie University, part-time instructors represented by the same union reached a tentative agreement earlier this month. Members have until October 30 to vote on whether to ratify it.
CUPE says that if the Dal deal is accepted, it could set a precedent for further progress at the other Halifax universities still without agreements.
